Black in Tech

The leaders at CSC are a great help and always accessible.

What’s your job title and how long have you been with CSC?

I’m a digital marketing specialist focused on managing email and blogs. I’ve been with CSC since April 2022.

What are your responsibilities?

I’m responsible for all emails through HubSpot, including webinars, marketing, and promotional content. I do some data analysis and give suggestions for improvement as well. The same goes for the blogs—I review the content, offer suggestions, post it, and help manage the distribution cadence. I’m also in charge of making updates to our company intranet.

What inspired you to get into tech?

In my senior year of college, I attended a conference hosted by Spotify and thought their marketing campaigns were terrific. I wanted to make tech accessible like that in whatever marketing capacity I could.

I studied strategic communications in college, which was more creative than technical. So it took about four years before I began specializing in digital marketing.

What was your career path in tech?

When I graduated from college, I went back home to Detroit and started working in marketing at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. It’s the second-largest African American history museum in the world. It was a lofty situation to get a job like that straight out of school, and at the time, there were just two of us in marketing—the director and me.

On my third day on the job, Aretha Franklin died. Her public viewing and subsequent tributes were the first big projects I worked on. Since it was just the two of us, I oversaw many areas. I was the channel manager for email and social, did some graphic design, and more. As the department grew, my role evolved, and I became an authority on all things digital.

This year I’ll earn my master’s degree in strategic advertising and marketing from Temple University in Philadelphia; the program has also been a big help on my journey in tech.

What has contributed to your success so far?

The first thing that comes to mind is excellent leadership. It’s essential to have good people to help bring forth good people. At my previous job, I had great supervisors, and I still talk to them to this day. Today, the leaders at CSC are a great help and always accessible. Another colleague, who isn’t my direct supervisor but has a wealth of knowledge, has shared her experiences, and that’s been very helpful. Everybody on my team is great.

As a Black professional, have you faced any obstacles in your career?

None that I’m aware of, probably because I started my career in a Black space. I had to deal with things like being the youngest person in the war room or being in a meeting led by a bunch of men who would try to talk over me. That was part of my experience beforehand, but everybody’s been genuinely lovely since coming to CSC.

Are you involved in any programs at CSC that support diversity, equity, and inclusion?

Not yet, but I admire the work that groups like the Black Employee Network and the Hispanic employee resource group do. I’ll probably get more involved once I graduate in December.

What advice would you give to other Black professionals who want to get into the tech industry?

Just because you didn’t start in tech doesn’t mean you can’t transition into tech if you have the right tools. One thing that helped me was getting certifications. I have a couple of Google certifications and have taken courses to gain more technical skills and bolster my resume.

Another thing about getting into tech is that you don’t have to go to the most prominent company to get your start. Tech roles exist in every industry in the same way marketing exists in every industry. You can start locally if you’re trying to get your foot in the door. If there’s a company you admire and have been following for a while, check their website and see their opportunities.
