New report from Corporation Service Company and World Trademark Review spotlights the rise of Web-based trademark filing services

LONDON, UK and WILMINGTON, Del. – CSC® and World Trademark Review are pleased to announce the release of a joint report on the top trademark services firms and corporate filers for 2010, revealing the impact of Web-based services on the U.S. filing landscape.

The study, which appears in the August/September issue of World Trademark Review under the title "A Better Mousetrap?" gives readers a ranking of the 100 leading trademark practitioners, insight into trademark filing activity, and an analysis of trends that will interest anyone with ties to the intellectual property world.

A successor to CSC's respected Trademark Insider annual feature, the report was prepared using public trademark filings data from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and reviewed by CSC's team of trademark professionals.

The study heralds some startling trends. For the first time, a Web-based trademark services firm, Raj Abhyanker PC, unseated the more traditional law firms that have long dominated this industry to claim top spot for filing volume. Another relative newcomer, The Trademark Company, came in at number three. Trademark filing heavyweight Greenberg Traurig, which had held the top spot for four years, dropped to number two in 2010. The law firms K&L Gates and DLA Piper Rudnick rounded out the top five.

World Trademark Review editor Trevor Little had this to say about the study results: "The rapid rise of new Web-based filing practices serves as a visible reminder of the impact technology is having on the provision of trademark legal services. It has also sparked intense debate on the type of service trademark owners need and currently receive. But however the service is offered, what is heartening is to compare the filing levels with previous editions of the CSC Trademark Insider. While not yet at their pre-economic crisis high, the downward trend of the past few years has been well and truly halted."

Along with law firms, the CSC/WTR report also ranks the top 100 companies by trademark filing volume in 2010. Heading the list was toymaker Mattel Inc., followed by the medical products firm Johnson & Johnson, media giants Time Warner and Walt Disney Company, and pharmaceutical leader GlaxoSmithKline.

"We're happy for this opportunity to partner with World Trademark Review to present these important findings," said Jim Stoltzfus, vice president and general manager for Domain and Trademark Services at CSC. "The report is a worthy heir to CSC's Trademark Insider, and offers a valuable, street-level view of the forces shaping the trademark world."
